Letz Glo
Hip Hopper since a toddler” are the famous Nas lyrics that best summarizes Glo Shines.. As the youngest of 6, she was permanently influenced by the music passed down from her older siblings. Originally, from East New York, Brooklyn she was deeply contoured by the culture, style, and slang of her neighborhood. This inspired her to write her first verse at 4 years old and continues to be the foundational tie that connects her to hip-hop. While a student of Old Dominion University, she was first exposed to spoken word poetry and integrated its expansive and imaginative literary techniques into her hot 16’s.
Her writing is a proud hybrid of hip-hop, poetry, jazz, community, fashion, reggae, art, history, and a lot of humor. Glo Shines’ aspiration as an artist is to be the embodiment of the Khalil Gibran quote, ‘I am a poet who composes what life proses, and who proses what life composes’. Her goal is to tell stories that simplify what is complex and decorate what is simple, in the flyest ways possible.. She draws from the most challenging parts of her life and creates music that is thoughtful, playful, and therapeutic for herself and others. As a performer Glo Shines is interactive with the audience, offering a unique blend of wit, raw honesty, heart, and improvisation.
She is dedicated to positively connecting with young people and community with her music and poetry. She has often performed for and worked with the public school systems, colleges and universities. She has also worked with various charities including Parents against Bullying, the Boys and Girls Club, Teens with a Purpose, Scores, and Words Beats and Life where she served as a teen poetry coach. She has featured and hosted at several notable venues including the Chrysler Museum, the Harrison Opera House, The Kennedy Center, The Norva, The Funny Bone, and the Apache Café.
In 2013, Glo Shines released her first project “Glyphs and Graffiti”, an ode to Hip Hop through the lens of an ancient past. In 2017, Glo Shines released her 2nd studio project “What the Water Gave”, a celebration of the losses, lessons, and creative growth she experienced living in the Hampton Roads Area (757!). In 2022, she released her 3rd studio EP called Mosaic Multiverse along with an accompanying book called Multiverse Mosaic. This fantasy ride is a multimedia tapestry of poetry, affirmations, photo art, and comics. In 2024, she released her mixtape ‘Intros and Interludes’, (yes more alliteration)! This time Glo Shines uses classic Hip Hop interludes to tell big stories about the moments in between. In October of this year, she released her video “Yeah Glo…Shines”, an interpolation of the GloRilla hit. Her most recent video is fun, colorful, and vibrant. This single shows sonic range and continued evolution as an artist.
